Try before you buy: From banjos to kayaks to chickens, here are five things you didn’t know you could rent in Chattanooga

If you’ve ever planned a wedding, gone to prom or wowed the guests at a children’s birthday party, you’re probably aware of the abundance of items you can rent to make an event a success — everything from tables and chairs to tuxes and limos to bouncy houses and petting zoos.

But that’s not all you can rent in Chattanooga. With the coronavirus still whittling large gatherings off our social calendars, we went in search of some short-term rentals that can entertain us during isolation. These adopt-a-hobbies are ideal for no-guilt trial runs to see if your new pursuits have long-term potential.

Here are five ideas for rentable activities that can keep you occupied at home during your downtime or that you can enjoy while remaining socially distanced. Suppliers featured here are examples of what you might find. Policies will vary depending on where you shop.

4. Swincars

Here’s a contraption you’ve likely not seen before: the Swincar e-Spider, an electric, four-wheel-drive quadricycle resembling something between a dune buggy and a Model T. Easily able to navigate all kinds of terrain, the Swincar matches its extreme off-road capabilities with a light environmental impact and silent operation.

In Chattanooga, the Swincar is available at Adventure Sports Innovation on River Street, a company that specializes in high-tech outdoor experiences. When you book an outing, ASI will deliver your Swincar to Reflection Riding Arboretum and Nature Center for a 60- or 90-minute tour within the 317-acre property.

Mark McKnight, president and CEO at Reflection Riding, says ASI’s CEOs and co-founders Carolina Eiris Molloy and Patrick J. Molloy reached out to him in 2018 with the “idea of letting people try out these crazy toys you might see on YouTube but never run into in day-to-day life.”

The buggies are ideal for exploring the 15 miles of trails at Reflection Riding, says McKnight.

“They allow you to see a lot more of the terrain and easily move across the terrain, especially as a way for people with disabilities to get out onto the trails,” he says. “They’re really low-impact — not like a four-wheeler where you’re tearing up the trails. They’re very low-impact and very quiet.”

Rental fees range from $109 to $250, which includes a $10 donation to Reflection Riding.

Other rentals available through ASI are electric bikes and scooters, hoverboards, hovershoes, Segways, electric unicycles and water bikes.

What to do Safely in Chattanooga, GoPride Chicago, Nov 28 2020 by Jerry Nunn

“What to do Safely in Chattanooga” appeared in Chicago GoPride after Jerry Nunn traveled to the Scenic City and got to experience several key attractions. Click here for the full article.

Heading to Hamilton County to visit Chattanooga, Tennessee can be a long and windy road, but the uphill battle is certainly worth it. This southeastern city in Tennessee runs along the Appalachian Mountains with unbelievable natural wonder to take in, especially when the leaves change color in the fall.

There are numerous outdoor excursions to be enjoyed in Chattanooga these days, making this the perfect time to come visit. One of the best and most original experiences to try is a vehicle called the Swincar at Adventure Sports Innovation. This French made electric car allows the driver to use hand controls and climb over rough terrain with a patient, personal guide leading the winding way.

Founder Spotlight: Patrick and Carolina Molloy with Adventure Sports Innovation by Co.Lab, Jul 31 2020

Founder Spotlight

Patrick and Carolina Molloy are the founders of Adventure Sports Innovation, a business that brings to market the latest inventions and innovations for outdoor experiences, sourced from inventors and manufacturers around the world.

The business is located on River Street in Chattanooga’s North Shore neighborhood, facing Coolidge Park and the gorgeous Tennessee River that runs through downtown Chattanooga. If you head to the river on a weekend, you are likely to see people having the time of their lives riding things you likely haven’t seen before, such as the Kymera E-Jet Bodyboard or the Lift eFoil Surfboard

Before they got into the business of outdoor experiences, Patrick and Carolina were both working in the finance sector in New York City. Patrick’s last position before leaving to start his business was as Director of Product Development for Bank of America. Carolina was a managing consultant for companies in the financial services industry.

In 2017, they decided they wanted a change of scenery and wanted to start an outdoor-centric business. They looked at several cities to move to, and after seeing the rapidly growing outdoor scene in Chattanooga and the tourism that came with it, they decided to make the move here. They arrived in the summer of 2017, where they experienced the city and all it had to offer like tourists themselves. A year later, they went through the CO.STARTERS program at CO.LAB and launched Adventure Sports Innovation.

2019 was a great year for their business. If there was an outdoor event in the area, such as the Ironman, they were there with a booth and it was a great way to attract customers to their business which was readily accessible for those spending their days downtown near the water. The company was also hosting excursions on land too, such as weekly tours at Reflection Riding where people would ride vehicles the company has exclusive rights to sell in the U.S., the Swincar E-Spider Off-Road Vehicle

Like most businesses across the country, Patrick and Carolina’s plans and hopes for growth in 2020 were disrupted by COVID-19. Trends in outdoor recreation have seen changes in recent months during the crisis. While more people are seeking out hiking and other activities, close to 50% of those doing activities are doing so only miles from their home, according to a study from LNT.org.

For Adventure Sports Innovation, this has become a challenge as more than 70% of last year’s business was from tourists. This year, tourists account for only 25% of their business. Group activities, such as corporate activities, are also significantly down. However, they say they have seen an increase in local participation, with more residents from the area coming to Coolidge Park and trying out for the first time what Adventure Sports Innovation has to offer.

In the meantime, Patrick and Carolina remain resilient in continuing to promote and bring in business. For Patrick, he says he is optimistic that Chattanooga will bounce back, and like many business owners in the region are asking, it is just a matter of when.

Swincar as the cover for Hammacher Schlemmer 2020 Spring catalog!

Swincar as the cover for Hammacher Schlemmer 2020 Spring catalog!

ASI was honored to have the Swincar as Hammacher Schlemmer Spring catalog cover. With over 3 Million copies and 172 years, Hammacher Schlemmer is considered one of the USA premier catalogs for gadgets.  An article from the Wall Street Journal highlighted “its ability to spot new gadgets before progress turnes them from luxuries to necessities”.

Click here to see Swincar  (a.k.a electric all terrain pendular quadricycle) as Hammacher Schlemmer Spring catalog cover.

Hammacher Schlemmer is America’s longest-running mail-order catalog. In 1848, William Tollner founded a hardware store in New York City’s Bowery District that would eventually give birth to the Hammacher Schlemmer catalog.

During the 1930s and 40s, the name Hammacher Schlemmer would become synonymous with innovation. It was here that the world first encountered the pop-up toaster (1930), the electric razor (1934) and the steam iron (1948). Later, Hammacher Schlemmer would offer the first electric pencil sharpener, food processor, electric can opener and automatic coffee maker. Other notable introductions include the first microwave oven (1968), telephone answering machine (1968) and cordless telephone (1975). At their introduction, these products were viewed by many as intriguing gadgets, but the company saw them as functional problem solvers.

Hammacher Schlemmer continues to serve customers’ needs in ways that no one else does or can. While some of the products may appear unusual, they all share the common goal of meeting the special needs of our many customers, just as a one-of-a-kind plumb bob did over a hundred years ago. From the beginning, our standards demanded quality, functionality and exemplary service. Some things should never change.
